Triplet comping figures five-beat displacements
by Tim Lake
jazz drumming #idea 66
Another idea is to develop some comping phrases using triplets for jazz drumming.
Each exercise contains a triplet figure, which is then displaced so it is played every fifth triplet beat. Alternatively, you think of this as a five-beat triplet figure with two rests. It takes five bars to resolve.
Exercise [A] uses two snare beats to a bass drum.
Exercise [B] uses one bass drum beat played to two snare drum beats. It is the reverse of [A].
Voicing the snare drum part around the kit sounds great.
The PDF contains two alternative figures following the same procedure.
The next level is to swap out the bass drum and play the hi-hat instead.
This is an exercise to extend your ear and your coordination so you need to experiment with using parts of these phrases musically in your time playing.
Have fun. Make music.
