Stick Transitions Warm Up
by Tim Lake
jazz drumming idea #18
This is a really simple warm up routine that I use a lot.
It's a good little work out that just involves moving through single strokes, doubles strokes and paradiddles in two subdivisions. Each sticking should be repeated at least 4 times [four bars of each sticking] and then move smoothly to the next sticking pattern without stopping.
Repeat the whole thing 4 times.
It is written as 16th note triplets and 32nd notes but could equally be practiced as 8th note triplets and 16th notes.
Of course, it's written out as right-hand lead, but should be practice left-hand lead too.
You can also practice on different parts of the kit, and then starting moving around the kit while maintaining the patterns and transitions.
Try it with brushes as well.
Slowly work on raising the tempo.
