Idea #26: Stick Control

I've written out a stick control exercise that is based on Alan Dawson's adaption of George L.Stone's classic "Stick Control" exercises. The idea is to build greater strength in the hands. Simply play one bar of sixteenths as single strokes, then alternating four sixteenths in each hand. Repeat with double strokes and paraddidles. Next do the exercises again playing eight sixteenths in each hand. Do each exercise four times. Once comfortable, double the length of the bars so it becomes a four bar exercise. Next do whole bars of sixteenths with each hand. In the pdf is the same exercise as triplets playing three, and then six, notes in each hand. Practice with the basic foot pattern.

Idea #25.3: The Other - Extensions

The final part of this look at the rhythmic figure consisting of and upbeat to a downbeat works on extending it over 3 bars in a four bar phrase. Work through all the exercises slowly and remember this is a 2 over 3 (2:3) so it creates a very interesting tension. Try to sing the rhythm as well as count it and feel the resolutions. Remember the cymbal pattern in exercises 1A - 1C can also be played as a comping figure on the snare, bass drum, hi-hat or an combination there of.

Idea #25.2: The Other - Phrases and Unisons

Following on from the last post, this is the page of phrases and unisons working from the upbeat to the downbeat. Remember to start from the up beat and play the downbeat on the repeat for variations 3 and 4. Work slowly and listen. These patterns have a lot of musical applications when played both swung and straight. Again careful with the 2 over 3 polyrhythm (Figure 5 in the pdf).

Idea #25.1: The Other Simple Phrase

Last year I posted some ideas entitled "A Simple Phrase" that featured a figure that starts on a downbeat and ends on an upbeat. However that was only half the story! There is of course another equally common partner figure, which starts on an upbeat and then ends on a downbeat. Here is the first set of exercises to work on this idea. What's a little bit tricky is that for exercises 3, 3A, 4, and 4A you need to start the figure on the upbeat and then loop round to the down beat on the repeat. Give it a go and keep counting.
