Listen, Listen, Listen

Founded in 1954 the Newport Jazz Festival in the US, is the grandfather of all jazz festivals and still one of the best with many top artists performing. This year was no exception featuring sets by Terence Blanchard, Joshua Redman, Jim Hall, Rez Abbasi, Robert Glasper and the great Wayne Shorter, whose quartet was joined by Herbie Hancock. Check it out over at NPR. Listen, Listen, Listen.

Wayne Shorter: Jazz Philosophy

Not the kind of thing I usually post but when there is opportunity to share some valuable insight from the jazz legend Wayne Shorter, who turned 80 this week, then it shouldn't be missed. What he says, in the interview clip below, is especially relevant to drummers who sometimes get too caught up in drums, drumming and rudiments, while forgetting about the rest of life. Music, and jazz especially, is about self expression and to do that you have to know things and have something to say about them; you have to take part in the conversation of life. Erudition is a great skill; read a lot; listen a lot; examine life then express your self.
