Grooves

These pages contain various jazz related drum grooves, although they tend to be more jazz fusion and funk orientated. It's my belief that a good jazz drummer should be well versed in a variety of different styles and grooves, so listening, transcribing and playing along is essential. Hopefully this will provide you with some good grooves to work on. For older posts check out the free Grooves for Jazz Drumming e-book.

Mike Clark: Palm Grease

Palm Grease is the lead track from Herbie Hancock's album "Thrust" and opens just with Mike Clark playing the groove. It's in some sense wonderfully simple with sixteenths on the Hi-Hat and a simple back beat, but the displaced and sparse second bar creates a nice bit of tension. Also included is the B section groove which is tricky because of the 2/4 bar or 2 beat fill the band play, transcribed is one iteration of it. One minor point is to remember to play the A section sixteenths with one hand on the Hi-Hat not hand to hand.

Billy Higgins: The Sidewinder

The Sidewinder is a classic album. The title track is a classic and so is the groove. So classic in fact that it is often dubbed the "Blue Note" groove and was something of a signature of the immensely versatile legendary Blue Note drummer Billy Higgins. Interestingly the cymbal pattern is played almost straight and it's very hard to hear what the bass drum is doing, but the groove is carried in syncopation in the snare drum. You should notice that this is an application of the figure we looked at in the Jazz Drumming Idea #21!

Brian Blade: Headin' Home

Hard to believe that Joshua Redman's "Mood Swing" album is twenty years old this year. It still sounds pretty fresh and is something of a modern (?!) classic not least because of the standard of the musicians; Christian McBride, Brad Melhdau, and Brian Blade!! There is plenty to study and learn from Blade's drumming on this album, but one of the things about his playing that makes him so great and versitile is his deep sense of groove. This, the last track on the album, is a fantastic example of that and it's interesting because of the displaced snare drum, the hi-hat opening on beat one. This being jazz drumming, Blade varies it quite a lot, but the first few bars set up the idea pretty well. The hard part is accenting the second beat of the double stroke to get the displaced backbeat on the "and" of two.

Zigaboo Modeliste: Sing a Simple Song

This is another great groove from Zig and New Orleans funk band, The Meters, and their self-titled debut record. It's actually a cover of a classic funk track from Sly and the Family Stone, called "Sing a Simple Song". The opening and accenting of the hi-hats with the snare drum sounds hip and can be a bit of a co-ordination challenge. An interesting feature of the "break" section is that the bass drum and hi-hat part are played in unison. A simple song and a simple groove. Get funky.
