Roy Haynes: H & H Intro

Not exactly a ditty, but a short little 8 bar intro from Roy Haynes to Pat Metheny's "H & H". Mostly based around the right hand playing the Hi-Hat and the interplay with the snare and bass drum, this is typical Haynes and a nice set-up for the head. Start slow, get it together and then use it to develop ideas for your own intros and solos.

Roy Haynes: Solar

It is no incident that Roy Haynes plays on two of my favourite albums, Pat Metheney's "Questions and Answer", and Chick Corea's "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs". He is literally a living legend that is still pushing the drumming envelope at 85! I especially love his up-tempo playing and phrasing, so here is a transcription of him playing Miles' "Solar" from "Question and Answer", which provides one of many great examples from that album. I have included the 2 choruses of the head, and the first two choruses of Pat's solo. Pay special attention to the 3-beat ideas with the Hi-Hat, but everything flows from the Ride cymbal!
