Ramble On

It's been almost exactly 3 years since I posted any Bonham and, although this is mainly a jazz drumming blog, that's far too long to not be paying dues to the greatest rock drummer.

Ramble On is one of my favourite Led Zepp tunes. It's not just the literary references but the way the whole song is put together and of course the groove. What Bonham is playing the semi-quavers (16th notes) on during the verses is anybody's guess but it sounds brilliant. Included here is the main drum groove from the (2nd) chorus followed by the guitar break groove. Of particular note is the way Bonham doesn't just play through it with a back beat, he interprets it much more musically by syncing and interplaying with the bass riff. Wonderful Stuff!

Whole Lotta Love

So a classic groove to start! John Bonham and Led Zeppelin are legendary. "Whole Lotta Love" is the opening track from Zed Zeppelin II and was their biggest hit. Included here is the intro fill and the first 8 bars.

Bonham seems to settle into the groove in bar 4. It is a great groove and deceptively simple with the use of the displaced snare drum on the & of four {or missing it altogether} sometimes throwing up a few problems. As always with Bonham it grooves. Check out the whole track, play along and listen to see how he develops the groove further.
