Elvin Jones: Blues to You

It's taken much longer than I planned to get this done, but this is the third and, for the moment, final part, of my study of Elvin Jones on "Coltrane Plays the Blues". Unlike the others, this is not a complete transcription (its' too long!), but the first 16 choruses, that end in a typical Elvin lick. There is so much to unpack here and work on, but I think the main difference to notice from the two earlier transcriptions of slower blueses is the way Elvin varies the cymbal pattern. He is playing a lot of patterns based on 3 beat figures that break up the time and create lots of tension and release; these are supported by the comping figures in the snare and bass drum. Also of note is the chops required to play triplets with one hand at this tempo (bar 23)!!!

Elvin Jones: Blues to Bechet

It's only been 2 years, but here at last is the second part of my study of Elvin Jones' playing on "Coltrane Plays the Blues". What you notice when comparing it to "Blues to Elvin", is that Elvin is playing a lot more because there is no piano. There are some great triplet figures and ideas, and I notated a couple of nice 3-beat variations in the cymbal pattern which are inflected in the comping. It's a nice easy tempo to get to grips with hand-foot triplet co-ordination. Again the pdf contains the complete transcription.

Elvin Jones: Blues to Elvin

Here is a complete transcription of Elvin Jones's comping on the track "Blues to Elvin" from the John Coltrane Album "Coltrane Plays the Blues." This is generally a great play along track for getting to grips with blues form and for getting into the groove, but I thought it was worth delving a little deeper into what Elvin was playing as this is quite accessible and provides a lot of ideas. It is interesting to see how his comping develops and grows in density through the solos! The pdf has the full three pages and this is intended to be the first of a 3 part study from the same album.
