Carter Beauford

Carter Beauford is one of the original members of the Dave Matthews Band, a famous American "jam" rock band who are known for their great live shows and their ability to improvise around their tunes. He plays opened handed and is incredibly versatile and creative, bringing a variety of styles to his playing. It could be fairly said that his drumming is one of the principle reasons for the success of the Dave Matthews Band.

Carter Beauford's drumming was a revelation to me when I got into the Dave Matthews Band. His playing opened up a whole way of thinking about and playing the drums that was entirely new and creative to me. It was also one of the main things that sent me in search of jazz. Perhaps the biggest thing I took from Beauford's playing was his broken hi-hat playing. Rather than just using straight 1/8, 1/16 or 1/4 notes, he uses the hi-hat as another voice, filling in lots of the space between the kicks and the snare. It is not quite a linear approach, but adds a more improvised voice on top of the main groove. One of the best examples of this is "Warehouse" from DMBs first album "Under the Table and Drumming". After the intro, it is basically played twice. Check out the recording.
